NPP presidential primary: 60 NPP MPs rally behind Bawumia
Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, the Member of Parliament for Mampong Constituency, has confirmed that 60 MPs of the party are in support of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s ambition to re-contest in the January 2025 presidential primary.
Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong, being the leader of the group backing the former Vice President, said efforts are ongoing to engage other MPs who have not yet publicly expressed their support.
“The processes are about to commence to select our leadership in the party, and one of the key ones is the flagbearership, and that is where the focus is. Our MPs — the number being 88 — are the political front of the party when we are in opposition. So that responsibility has just come upon us, and we have to take the mantle and do what is right,” he said after paying a visit to Dr. Bawumia.
He emphasised that the MPs’ support for Dr. Bawumia is entirely voluntary, with each member making their own informed choice.
“…MPs on their volition have made their own decisions and decided to align with A, B, C, and in Parliament as at today, 60 of the 88 have indicated and declared that they want to side with their colleagues to champion the cause of Dr. Bawumia to win the flagbearership and to lead the party into the elections in 2028. So it is a voluntary thing, nobody was pressured”.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in response, expressed his gratitude to the MPs for their backing.
“It was a very happy visit, it was a courtesy call, and it was a call to declare support for me, and I am so happy. In terms of the group that has declared support for me from Parliament, it now amounts to just over 60 MPs — and you know we have 88 MPs — and so that tells you that a very significant number of MPs have declared their support for me.
“I just want to use this opportunity to thank all of them… I believe this is going to be very important… I am very happy for what they have done today.”
This public support for Dr.Bawumia comes shortly after the NPP set January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries, a decision confirmed during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Tuesday, June 17.
