NPP primaries: Ursula Owusu’s contender Albert Kan Dapaah Jnr failed at vetting

Albert Kan Dapaah Jnr, the only contender in the Ablekuma West New Patriotic Party parliamentary primaries, failed to clear the first hurdle in his bid to unseat the incumbent Member of Parliament, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.

The party’s regional executives failed Mr Kan Dapaah Jnr, who had earlier alleged that constituency executives were playing hide and seek with nomination forms.

In February, Mr Kan Dapaah, who is the son of the National Security Minister, vowed to unseat the incumbent MP, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, as the party’s parliamentary candidate in the constituency.  But he cited foul play after he was allegedly left stranded at the party’s constituency office on February 5, 2020, when he arrived to pick up nomination forms to contest the primaries.

After his vetting, the Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the NPP, Parker Ordalai France, told Class FM that the young politician did not make the mark.

He was, however, quick to add that Mr Kan Dapaah Jnr had not been disqualified, but had failed the vetting, and could only contest if he was cleared at the national level after an appeal.

“We don’t disqualify, we only make recommendations to the national party, so, if the national party says ‘You are not able to contest’, then they have disqualified you,” Mr France stated.

“For us, Kan Dapaah Jnr. even brought the party’s name into disrepute. He issued a certain statement on Facebook. He granted an interview at Citi FM and then he labelled a Member of Parliament for the constituency, that the MP created another album to run the 2016 election.

“He [Kan Dapaah Jr.] said the MP brought her own electoral register, which is not correct. It is the region which supervised all elections concerning constituencies, so, he has tarnished the image of the region, the national party and the NPP as a whole and he accepted that he didn’t do well but he’s ready to apologise,” Mr France said in response to why Mr Kan-Dapaah Jr. was failed.
