NUGS suspends planned protest against WAEC

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has decided to suspend its planned demonstration against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) regarding the cancellation and withholding of results for several students from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Originally set for today, Tuesday, February 25, the protest aimed to urge WAEC to release the pending results for affected students, who are now facing uncertainty about their university admissions and academic futures.

However, just hours before the event, NUGS took to social media to announce the suspension of the protest following new commitments from WAEC.

In a statement, NUGS shared that the decision was made after an emergency meeting with WAEC officials and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

During this meeting, WAEC promised that all currently withheld results would be made available by March 1, 2025.

“Following an emergency meeting with WAEC officials and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, NUGS has suspended the planned demonstration scheduled for February 25, 2025. WAEC has given firm assurances that all pending withheld results will be released by March 1, 2025,” the statement read.

This situation arose when WAEC withheld and cancelled results for numerous students citing alleged examination malpractice, impacting hundreds across the nation and leading to significant frustration among students, parents, and education stakeholders.

Initially, NUGS demanded that WAEC either release the results or clarify the reasoning behind their decision. The union asserted that withholding results would significantly impact the affected students, especially those pursuing university admissions and scholarships.
