Obra Spot land to be developed into modern bus terminal – Klottey Korle Assembly

The Klotey Korle Municipal Assembly has called for calm following fears by drivers and petty traders occupying the Obra Spot trotro station of a possible ejection from the area.

According to the Assembly, the said parcel of land belongs to the state, contrary to claims that it is owned by an individual.

Some drivers and petty traders in the area on Thursday staged a protest and burnt vehicle tyres after an excavator reportedly escorted by military officers moved to the transport station to evict them.

The incident drew personnel from the Fire Service and the Police to help maintain calm.

The Klottey Korle Municpal Assembly, in whose jurisdiction the parcel of land falls under, at a meeting with them on Friday, assured the drivers that they will not be relocated.

The Public Relations Officer of the Assembly, Nii Ofori Quaye, in an interview on Friday said the land belongs to the government and not a private developer as the drivers had gathered.

“I can say at the moment that, that [land] is a government facility. It belongs to the government of Ghana. Perhaps it belongs to the Lands Commission. This is a government facility acquired through the traditional leaders years ago and it has remained so, so whatever you see at the Lands Commission  will show that it belongs to the government,” he said.

He said the land in question was inherited from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) when it had jurisdiction of the area.

Nii Ofori Quaye explained that the assembly intends to construct an ultra-modern transport terminal on the land to serve the transport needs of commuters.

“This area is one of the facilities we inherited from the AMA and plans are far advanced to develop that place into a modern transport terminal. We have a big land for that area to develop it into a state better than it is now.”

Ofori Quaye however did not give details as to how far the Assembly had gone in the planned construction.
