Ofori-Atta removed from OSP wanted list

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has cancelled former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta from the list of wanted persons in relation to corruption offences in Ghana.

The latest update follows a letter from Ofori-Atta’s lawyer to the OSP, explaining when he would be available in the country to respond to the queries in relation to some suspicious transactions under his tenure as finance minister.

“Consequently, Mr. Ofori-Atta has been removed from the OSP’s list of wanted persons, and the OSP ceases to consider Mr. Ofori-Atta a fugitive from justice pending his voluntary return to the jurisdiction circa his stated date,” a press release by the OSP on Tuesday, February 18, said.

“If Mr. Ofori-Atta fails to voluntarily return to the jurisdiction circa his stated date, and if Mr. Ofori-Atta fails to attend the OSP on the rescheduled date, he shall be re-entered on the OSP’s list of wanted persons and the OSP shall then consider him a fugitive from justice, and the OSP shall take all necessary legal steps to secure his return to the jurisdiction and attendance at the OSP at our own choosing.

“The OSP is committed to its mandate of ensuring accountability guided by due process and fairness,” the OSP added.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng said the Former Minister was a person of interest in the investigations of the National Cathedral project, Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML) & GRA contract and ECG and Beijing Technology Limited contract termination.

The two others are the procurement of ambulances and GRA’s Tax Refund Account Payments.

He, therefore, asked Mr Ofori-Atta, who is out of the country for medical treatment to return to Ghana immediately for questioning.

The OSP added that failure to comply will force them to apply all legal means to compel his return.

The OSP’s decision to label Ofori-Atta a fugitive drew considerable public backlash, with critics questioning the legality of the action and alleging political motivations.

Some argued that declaring him a fugitive while he was receiving medical care abroad was an excessive and unfair measure.
