One dead, 50 others missing in Black Volta boat accident

One person has been confirmed dead, while 50 others are missing after a boat accident on the Black Volta in the Savannah Region.

According to Mr Kipo Sulemana, the Bole District Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the boat capsized while transporting passengers from Dorkorchina to Kpandai.

He said information indicated that the boat was overloaded with people and goods.

Mr Sulemana added that the boat hit some tree stumps in the river, forcing it to capsize.

He said where the incident happened was inaccessible. Therefore,  NADMO is relying on the local people to find the missing.

Meanwhile, two people survived the accident.

This adds to the number of drowning-related deaths reported in the last three weeks.

On May 3, three persons reportedly died in the Volta Lake at Yeji in the Bono East Region.

The deceased persons from Makango in the Savanna Region missed the ferry to Yeji and decided to travel by boat.

However, the boat capsized during a storm on the river leading to their demise.

In another incident, a 12-year-old boy drowned in the lake at Jaklai, a suburb of Yeji in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region.

The deceased reportedly went to the lakeside with two other boys on Sunday, May 21, 2023, to fetch water when the accident occurred.

A 22-year-old fisherman, Emmanalso drowned in the Volta Lake in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region.

The unfortunate incident happened on Thursday, May 25, 2023.
