One person has been shot dead in a clash over chieftaincy at Prampram in the Greater Accra Region.
It is unclear who made the shot but a statement from the police attributed it to a scuffle that emerged from disagreements over chieftaincy.
“There has been a shooting incident at Prampram arising out of a protracted chieftaincy issue, in which one person has been confirmed dead”, the statement said.
The police have since commenced investigations into the matter.
Issues of chieftaincy dispute keep reoccurring in some parts of the country.
It has impacted negatively on the people of the area where lives and properties have been destroyed whenever tensions erupt into violent clashes.
In some of these cases, residents are left with no other option than to flee the affected communities.
Usually, these disputes are protracted fights, lingering for years and triggering violence at the least provocation.
In August, at least, nine persons involved in violent clashes at Teshie, a suburb of Accra, were arrested by the police after an incident spurred by chieftaincy disagreements.
At the base of the incident is a chieftaincy dispute between two factions. One person was reportedly shot in the leg while a shrine belonging to a traditional priest was burnt to the ground.
Speaking to a local radio station, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Kwame Danso, mentioned that the Division Commander held a meeting with opinion leaders in the area concerning the clashes.
The information available to The Ghana Report alleged that men with guns besieged that home of the shrine and fired some shots. These men are also believed to be the ones behind the fire that was set to the shrine.
