OSP defends decision to declare Ofori-Atta a fugitive

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has stood by its decision to declare former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive, explaining that the move was necessary due to his persistent refusal to appear for questioning.

Samuel Appiah Darko, Director of Strategy, Research, and Communication at the OSP, addressed the decision during an interview on Saturday, February 15.

According to Mr Darko, despite multiple invitations, Mr Ofori-Atta has failed to cooperate with the OSP’s investigations, prompting the office to take a drastic step.

“We did not take this decision lightly,” he emphasised on JoyNews.

He explained that Ofori-Atta’s continued absence, particularly while staying abroad for medical treatment, indicated an attempt to evade accountability for his alleged involvement in corruption.

The OSP’s decision to label Ofori-Atta a fugitive has drawn considerable public backlash, with critics questioning the legality of the action and alleging political motivations. Some have argued that declaring him a fugitive while he is receiving medical care abroad is an excessive and unfair measure.

However, Darko maintained that the OSP followed due process, ensuring that Ofori-Atta had ample opportunity to engage with the investigation before such a declaration was made.

He reinforced that the law mandates necessary legal steps when an individual refuses to cooperate in an ongoing investigation.

This controversial move has sparked broader debates about the transparency and impartiality of corruption investigations in the country.

Advocates for due process are urging the OSP to ensure that its actions remain within the confines of the law and are free from political influence.
