Supreme Court nominee Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo has urged Ghanaians to view patriotism as more than simply reciting the national pledge.

He believes true loyalty to Ghana involves meaningful actions that support the country’s progress and legal systems.

Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, June 20, Justice Ackaah-Boafo said patriotism should be reflected in everyday civic responsibility and national service.

“I think that since the pledge is a great thing for all of us to know, I’m sure Ghanaian patriotism must be anchored in more than our ability to recite the pledge only. There are other things that all of us can do to demonstrate our patriotism to the country,” he said.

He also proposed reforms to Ghana’s jury system, which he believes is too narrow in its current form. While praising its democratic foundation, he recommended that eligibility be expanded beyond public servants to include all citizens over 21 years.

According to him, a broader jury pool would make the system more representative and efficient, potentially speeding up trial processes.

On delays in the criminal justice system, he raised concerns about ongoing cases stretching back several years. He said reforms are needed to ensure trials are concluded within reasonable timeframes.

Justice Ackaah-Boafo also condemned mob justice, describing it as unlawful and dangerous. He insisted that only the judicial system has the authority to resolve disputes and punish wrongdoing.
