Photos: Blood spills in London as white supremacist target anti-racism protesters

London police had a tough keeping the peace in Britain’s capital this weekend as they stood between persons alleged far-right groups and Black Lives Matter demonstrators.

That notwithstanding, melees broke out in resulting in injuries and the arrest of more than 100 people.

London’s Metropolitan Police said in a tweet that the arrests were made as of 9pm on Saturday.

The Black Lives Matter demonstrations spilt from the United States, where an African-American was killed under the knees of a white policeman. The victim, George Floyd, was accused of paying for food with a counterfeit $20 bill.

His death sparked demonstration around the world with Germany, the UK, South Korea, France and Belgium pulling huge crowds.

In London, a week of sustained protests resulted in the demonstrators defacing or pulling down iconic statues associated with slavery.

The list included Edward Colston’s, whose ships are believed to have transported about 80,000 men, women and children from Africa to the Americas. But his memory has been honoured for centuries in his home city of Bristol, which benefited from his vast wealth.

The stories behind the statues targeted in protests

The demonstrators went after the giant statue, honouring his memory and that of many others spread across the UK.

But far-right activists have had enough of seeing the symbol of what they consider white supremacy either pulled down or defaced.
On Saturday and Sunday, the far-right groups bombarded police with bottles and occasionally scuffled violently with officers as they staged a counter-protest in central London.

Police also arrested a 28-year-old man after an individual was photographed on Saturday apparently urinating on a memorial to a police officer killed while defending Parliament from a terrorist attack in 2017.

British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson condemned the attack in a tweet, saying thuggery and racism had no place on the street of the UK.
