The Executive Secretary of the Bureau of Public Safety (PBS), Dr. Nana Yaw Akwada, has strongly criticised the leadership of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) in the wake of the recent assault on nurses, calling for the immediate removal of the hospital’s Medical Director.
Speaking in an interview on Saturday, August 23, Dr. Akwada said the August 17 attack during which relatives of a patient allegedly assaulted medical staff at the hospital’s emergency department reveals a glaring failure in security protocols and demands urgent accountability.
“If I were the Minister of Health, given all this conversation around accountability, the Medical Director would already be home by now,” he said.
“A serious security breach occurred, and someone must take responsibility.”
Dr. Akwada also questioned how a major referral facility like Ridge Hospital, located in the heart of the capital and designated as a regional hospital, still lacks proper security infrastructure in 2025.
“It simply doesn’t make sense that in 2025, a hospital like Ridge still has no functional security systems in place,” he said.
He stressed that relieving the Medical Director of her duties would send a clear message to healthcare leaders nationwide about the critical importance of protecting frontline health workers and patients.
“Taking decisive action would not only serve justice in this case but also compel other medical directors to prioritise security and prevent similar incidents in the future,” Dr. Akwada concluded.
