School proprietor arrested for locking up BECE candidates over fees

The proprietor of The Big Six Educational Complex in Meduma, located in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region, has been arrested for allegedly preventing two candidates from writing their mathematics exam during the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) due to unpaid fees.

Reports indicate that he not only confined the students but also assaulted them, locking them in a separate room at the examination centre and only releasing them after the examination had concluded.

The police arrested him based on allegations of assault through imprisonment.

According to a statement from the police, Afoakwa Sarpong, the proprietor, was apprehended on Monday, June 17, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.

The arrest was conducted by Nana Adu Mensah Asare, the Municipal Director of Education for Kwabre East, along with Ms. Mavis Okyere Anane, the Public Relations Officer of the Education Directorate.

Authorities stated that Sarpong was transferred to the Mamponteng District Police Command regarding the reported offence of assault by imprisonment.

The police have initiated a formal investigation into the matter, assuring that the appropriate legal processes will be followed.
