The U.S. Consul General in Ghana, Mr. Elliot Fertik, has emphasised that what applicants post on social media can directly impact the approval or denial of their U.S. visa applications.

In an interview on Tuesday, June 24, Mr. Fertik explained that under current U.S. immigration policy, consular officers are authorised to review applicants’ digital footprints, including social media posts, as part of standard background checks.

“This policy is particularly relevant for student visa applicants, we now assess the online presence of all student visa candidates. That’s why we advise them to set their social media profiles to public before attending their interviews,” he said.

According to Mr. Fertik, the move is part of stricter vetting procedures designed to strengthen U.S. national security and ensure transparency and integrity in the visa process.

He emphasised that applicants may be denied a visa if their online content raises concerns related to security, criminal behaviour, or ethical conduct.

“We’re not just looking at academic records anymore. Your digital footprint tells a story, and we’re listening,” he added.
