Strike could resume if gov’t fails to deliver on promises – GRNMA warns

I’mThe Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has issued a strong warning that it will resume its suspended strike if the government fails to honour its commitments to improve their conditions of service.

Speaking in an interview following the suspension of their nationwide industrial action on Friday, June 13, GRNMA’s First Vice President, Samuel Alagkora Akolgo, emphasised that the association’s patience is limited.

The strike, which began on June 2, was paused after what GRNMA described as “fruitful” negotiations with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and government representatives.

However, concerns remain after the government disclosed that the GH¢2 billion required to meet the nurses’ demands was not included in the current budget and may only be available in 2026.

Mr. Akolgo expressed cautious optimism ahead of a follow-up meeting scheduled for June 26, saying the Association trusts the integrity of the Parliamentary Select Committee members.

Still, he underscored that GRNMA expects the government to fulfill its end of the agreement.

“We suspended the strike because we believed progress had been made. But if the government fails to act, we will not hesitate to resume,” he stated firmly.

He avoided confirming whether a strike is imminent, instead calling on government to do the right thing for nurses and midwives so they can continue providing essential healthcare services to Ghanaians.

The June 26 meeting is seen as a turning point. Without concrete steps from government, the fragile truce could collapse disrupting healthcare services once again across the country.
