A district court in Nalerigu has remanded Waliu Fazazi into police custody following his arrest in connection with a major mobile money robbery at Bunkpurugu in the North East Region.
Waliu Fazazi, who appeared before the court on Friday, April 25, 2025, is accused of participating in the theft of GH₵1,300,000.00 from a mobile money vendor on April 23.
Police investigations suggest that Fazazi, along with accomplices currently on the run, staged the robbery during a fake mobile money transaction.
Reports say the suspect initially approached the vendor pretending he was withdrawing GH₵15,000.00 on behalf of his brother, blaming network issues for a delay.
While the vendor was processing the transaction, two masked men, one armed, stormed the scene, demanded the vendor’s cash bag, and fired warning shots before fleeing on a motorbike.
After his court appearance, Fazazi was ordered to remain in custody and is expected to reappear on May 9, 2025, as investigations continue.
The police have appealed to the public for support in tracking down the other suspects.
“We urge anyone with credible information to come forward and assist us in bringing the remaining suspects to justice,” an officer involved in the case said.
The case has sparked concern among residents, as mobile money vendors in the area call for heightened security measures to protect their operations.
