A bizarre incident unfolded at the Prampram D/A Basic ‘B’ and Methodist Freeman Basic Schools in the Greater Accra region after more than 20 students were hospitalised on Monday, April 14, 2025, after drinking Asaana (a local corn drink).
Reports indicate that the students collapsed during class hours.
According to an eyewitness, the children were seen running in distress before collapsing. They have currently been admitted at Prampram Polyclinic, where medical personnel are closely monitoring their health.
The Asaana vendor has also been hospitalised after tasting the drink.
Meanwhile, the Ningo-Prampram District Health Directorate is collaborating with parents and school officials to investigate the situation and ensure the well-being of other students.
This comes after over 30 students from Ajumako Afransi Technical and Vocational Institute in the Central Region were hospitalised in June 2024 following a suspected case of food poisoning.
The students began experiencing severe stomach pains, nausea, and vomiting shortly after consuming Waakye and stew during lunch on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.
School authorities quickly responded by rushing the affected students to the Ajumako Baah Hospital and Ajumako District Government Hospital for treatment.
Concerned parents arrived at the hospitals and the school to check on their children as more students fell ill and were subsequently hospitalised on Wednesday morning, June 12, 2024.
