It was a solemn moment as friends, family, and sympathisers bid their farewell to the 24-year-old immigration officer, Michael Otoo.

The vibrant young man was shot dead by unknown assailants at Kokoligu, a village between Nandom and Hamile in the Upper West Region.

The funeral rites, which were held at African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church, Atico, in Accra, also had in attendance the top hierarchy of the Ghana Immigration Service.

Colleagues, sympathisers and family, who were still in a state of shock over his death, struggled with tears as they filed past his body.

Mr Michael Otoo, the last of four children, was described by most as a very charitable person who was always willing to share the little he had with others.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the officer was slain by some suspected smugglers after a long struggle with them.

Investigations are still ongoing to uncover the mystery behind his death.

Crime scene experts from the Ghana Police Service, Defence Intelligence operatives, and other security personnel were deployed to the Upper West Region to spearhead the investigation.

The service has assured that it will leave no stone unturned in hunting down perpetrators of the crime.

It further called on individuals to volunteer information on suspected persons and their activities to the police for prompt action.

Meanwhile, the late Michael Otoo, who died in the line of duty, has been promoted posthumously from AICO1 to ICO.
