A late afternoon accident on the Achimota Highway left a young pedestrian injured and sparked outrage among onlookers, nearly turning violent.
The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 23, 2025, when a commercial minibus, struck a man attempting to cross the highway.
Eyewitnesses described the vehicle as speeding, and the impact immediately drew a large crowd.
“The way people rushed to the scene, I thought he was dead,” said Kwame Asare, a commercial driver who witnessed the accident.
“The crowd got angry and tried to confront the driver, but he managed to escape.”
The pedestrian was quickly rushed to the hospital. His current condition remains unclear, but sources at the scene confirmed he was alive when help arrived.
The near-lynching of the trotro driver highlights growing frustration among residents and commuters over the frequent accidents on this stretch of road. Many blame the lack of safe pedestrian infrastructure for the recurring danger.
Calls for more footbridges and better traffic controls have grown louder in recent months. Commuters say the existing infrastructure does not support the high foot traffic in the area, especially during peak hours.
This accident adds to ongoing concerns about road safety in the Greater Accra region, where pedestrian-involved crashes remain common.
Despite road safety campaigns, many believe stronger action is needed to protect lives.
