Tensions high as farmers in Affram plains vow to attack herders

There is a looming bloodbath between farmers and Fulani herders at Afram Plains in the Eastern Region.

Some farmers have vowed to launch bloody attacks on the nomadic herdsmen, who have destroyed large hectares of the farmers’ crops with their cattle.

The aggrieved farmers have petitioned the Inspector General of Police, James Oppong Boanuh, and the National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah, to intervene with urgency.

According to them, failure of the security agencies to intervene would compel them to invade the bushes to kill all the cattle and force the herdsmen out of the community.

Starr FM reported that some farmers in Aframso community had planned to launch devastating attacks on the Fulani herdsmen who were equally armed to the teeth.

“We want the National Security to come to our aid because we cannot look unconcerned. The only thing I think at the moment is for all the Fulanis to move to the ranch to bring peace if not there will be chaos,” a farmer told the station.

He added, “As for me, I have bought many cartridges and I have vowed to shoot every cattle seen on my farm. We are not afraid of the herdsmen. We can annihilate them from this area. They are not stronger than us, but we want peace, the reason we want the police and National Security to intervene.”

The Assembly Member for Ahenbronomu Electoral area, Moro Dwamena, waded into the matter with a call on the government to evacuate the herders and their cattle to the fodder bank constructed to avert a bloodbath.

“The government has built a cattle ranch for all the herdsmen to send their cattle,  but many of them are reluctant to go. They say their cattle will die if they go there.

“So we have petitioned the District Police Commander. We had wanted to demonstrate against the Fulanis, but the police say we should move on. Some farmers too are to be blamed because a few have sold their lands to the herdsmen to feed their cattle,” he told Starr FM.
