Members of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU-GH) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are preparing to suspend their ongoing strike by Monday.
This follows a meeting with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), which promised to address their concerns within two weeks.
The union had declared the strike over what they saw as inadequate representation on KNUST’s Governing Council. After engaging with GTEC officials, TEWU-GH leadership believes progress is now possible.
National Chairman of TEWU-GH, Abdul Sulemana, urged members to remain calm as discussions continue.
“We are using this opportunity to plead with our members to have patience so that the issues can be dealt with, and we believe that in about two weeks, these issues will be put to rest,” he said.

Local Chairman at KNUST, Charles Arthur, also confirmed that the group intends to suspend the action after final consultations with members.
He cited provisions in Ghana’s Labour Act that call for a cooling-off period when negotiations are ongoing.
GTEC’s Director-General, Dr Abdulai Jinapor, clarified that the Commission is not taking sides. He reiterated GTEC’s commitment to a fair resolution and elaborated that proper representation must come from within the union itself.
The strike’s suspension is expected to restore normal operations at KNUST, while talks continue to resolve the underlying issues raised by TEWU-GH.
