Tottenham confirm Fabio Paratici to take ‘leave of absence’ following FIFA ban

Tottenham Hotspur have announced managing director of football Fabio Paratici will take a ‘leave of absence’ following FIFA’s decision to ban him from world football for 30 months.

Paratici was initially handed such a ban by the Italian FA (FIGC) following his role in Juventus’ financial mismanagement during his spell as sporting director in Turin.

This ban was made global by FIFA on Wednesday evening, but Spurs initially spoke of their anger at such a charge on short notice. Tottenham’s statement came to the surprise of the football world, particularly as Juventus’ entire board resigned when allegations first came to light back in November 2022.

But Tottenham have now agreed with Paratici that he will step back from his duties until the he learns the outcome of his appeal, which is scheduled for April 19.

In a new statement, Spurs said: “This week – 29 March 2023 – the FIFA Disciplinary Committee announced a decision to extend the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) sanctions, relating to Fabio Paratici, worldwide. This decision was taken in advance of Fabio Paratici’s Appeal hearing against the FIGC sanctions on 19 April 2023, the result of which would then have been considered by additional stakeholders, including the Club.

“Given FIFA’s unexpected ruling the sanctions may now have multi-jurisdictional effect, although they are still related to the FIGC Appeal.

“In view of FIFA’s decision, Fabio has agreed with the Club that he will take an immediate leave of absence pending the outcome of his Appeal.”
