Two held in Elmina for smuggling 250 bags of cocoa beans

On Sunday night, June 8, 2025, police in Elmina, Central Region, arrested two men in connection with an attempt to smuggle 250 bags of cocoa beans out of Ghana.

The arrests came after weeks of careful intelligence work targeting a syndicate believed to be moving cocoa beans and illicit drugs to neighbouring countries.

At around 11 PM, officers stopped a Hyundai Mighty truck driven by Andy Kwofie. The truck was loaded with the cocoa beans.

During questioning, Kwofie revealed that the beans were meant for Francis Armah, who planned to transport them by sea to other countries. Police later arrested Francis the same night.

ASP Patrick Bentum from the Central Regional Police Command shared, “These arrests show our commitment to stopping illegal activities that hurt Ghana’s economy.”

The truck is now impounded at the Regional Police Headquarters in Cape Coast. Both suspects remain in custody and are cooperating with ongoing investigations.

Authorities say they are continuing efforts to track down other members of the smuggling ring.
