University administrators threaten strike over GTEC defiance

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has issued a stern warning that it will embark on a nationwide strike if the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) fails to comply with directives issued by the National Labour Commission (NLC).

In a statement, GAUA revealed that the NLC, on Monday, June 9, ordered GTEC to take immediate action on several critical issues.

These include reinstating allowances that were withdrawn or reduced for GAUA members last month, initiating dialogue to address discrepancies in the Single Spine Salary Structure, and reversing a controversial directive on office-holding.

Despite this clear directive, GAUA says GTEC has yet to take any meaningful steps toward implementation.

The Association has given the government until the end of the month to act decisively or face industrial action across the country’s public universities.

In a related development, the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has also issued a seven-day ultimatum to GTEC.

The union is demanding the immediate reversal of a directive requiring traditional public universities to swear in members of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU-TUC) onto their Governing Councils, a move TEWU-GH strongly opposes.

Both unions stress that failure to address these concerns promptly will lead to severe disruptions across Ghana’s tertiary education sector.
