The US Embassy in Ghana has warned Ghanaians to desist from engaging in illegal visa acquisition and illegal migration.
Speaking during a Consular Media Day in Accra on May 9, 2025, US Consular General Elliot Fertik indicated that engagement in visa fraud and unauthorised migration to the US could lead to visa refusals, revocations, or deportation.
The Consular Media Day was purposely organised to explain US visa policy, improve public understanding of the process, and reinforce the Embassy’s dual mission of facilitating legal travel while securing US borders.
Mr. Fertik also revealed that the Embassy issued 25,000 visas to Ghanaian applicants in 2024, while 36,000 applications were either denied or not completed.
“We continue to welcome visitors from Ghana who are interested in studying, investing, or doing business in the US. Last year, the US Embassy issued 25,000 visas to Ghanaians for work, study, or visit to the U.S. But with entry to the US, visa applicants or holders must follow our laws,” Mr Fertik stated.
Mr. Fertik also reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and efficient application process in the country.
“The US has zero tolerance for illegal immigrants. Those who break the rules will face the law, including visa refusal or outright ban from entering the US,” he warned.
According to the Consular General, the American government is responsible for ensuring legal travel as well as protecting its borders.
“We also have the mandate of ensuring our borders are protected by protecting the US against illegal immigration by enforcing the laws,” he stated.
Mr Fertik further added that the Embassy has currently made the visa acquisition process more convenient for applicants.
