Embattled Akwatia Member of Parliament (MP) Ernest Yaw Kumi made a swift exit from the chamber of parliament on Wednesday while proceedings were still ongoing.
His departure followed the Koforidua High Court’s decision to convict him of contempt and issue a bench warrant for his arrest.
The first-term MP was seen hastily packing his belongings and leaving the chamber just minutes after arriving.
The court’s ruling came after Mr. Kumi failed to appear for a hearing, despite an interim injunction issued on January 7 barring him from being inducted as MP-elect due to an ongoing legal dispute over his election.
However, he defied the order and took the oath of office on January 6, 2025.
Presiding over the case, Justice Senyo Amedahe noted that the MP had repeatedly failed to appear in court for the contempt proceedings. The judge also dismissed a letter from the Minority Caucus, which cited parliamentary duties as the reason for Mr. Kumi’s absence, stating that accepting the excuse would undermine the court’s authority.
