Video: Policeman, bystander shot dead in Jamestown daylight robbery

Two persons are reported dead in a robbery at Adedenkpo in Jamestown.

The gun-totting assailants shot three persons, including a policeman, during the heist, which occurred Monday afternoon close to the Accra Timber Market area.

Three armed robbers on a motorcycle trailed a Mon-Tran bullion van heading to the market.

Upon reaching an enclave with some mechanics, the robbers sped closer to the van and shot the policeman protecting the vehicle in the head.

The brazen assault left the Nissan car with registration number GT 8592 W with several bullet holes, including one through the car’s windscreen.

The bloodthirsty gunmen did not spare the driver as they shot him several times without blinking.

A trader who was selling within the enclave was also gunned down.

“Onlookers led police to a wooden structure where the body of one Afua Badu aged 40 was also found lying prone in a pool of blood. Spot enquiries revealed that she was pursued and shot at for raising an alarm,” the police said.

A salesgirl at the back of the van managed to escape from the car.

The robbers fired indiscriminately in her direction but missed.

According to police, the cop and the woman died on the spot, while the driver was later rushed to the Korle Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The robbers took the policeman’s gun after breaking the padlock of the safe and bolted with an undisclosed amount of money that was being transported.

The driver is currently battling for his life after sustaining life-threatening injuries.

The bodies have also been conveyed to the Police Hospital Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The bloody crime scene has been cordoned off as police begin investigations into the crime.

The deceased cop was later identified as Constable Emmanuel Osei of the Special Weapon and Tactics Unit (SWAT) of the Ghana Police Service.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police Effia Tenge, has called on the public to volunteer information that could lead to the arrest of the culprit.

The recent attack comes barely a week after another heist occurred at Pigfarm in Accra on June 9.

Two robbers on a motorbike chased a 34-year-old victim who had in his possession a backpack.

After they got to the victim, they shot him multiple times and sped off after snatching the bag.

The wounded man had to be rushed to the 37 Military Hospital to save his life after bleeding profusely.

The recent robbery attacks have raised concerns over the bold robbery attacks undertaken in broad daylight.
