Vodafone Foundation, GES launch STEM Teacher Awards

VODAFONE Ghana Foundation in partnership with the Ghana Education Service (GES) has launched its maiden edition of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) teacher Awards in Accra.

The awards, scheduled to take place tomorrow (October 7), seek to recognise, empower and celebrate teachers for their commitment in inspiring young people in STEM both in and out of the classrooms for the future benefit of the country.

The event will be on the theme: “Rewarding Impactful Service”.

Speaking at the launch, the Head of Vodafone Ghana Foundation, Rev. Amaris Nana Adjei Perbi, said the Foundation was very ecstatic for the launch of the impressive educational initiative for the Ghanaian populace.

He said the STEM Teacher awards initiative targeted at teachers in Ghana would have a ripple effect on our education value chain.

“The Foundation remains committed to its mandate for the execution of a highly impactful range of educational initiatives in the country every year.

“The STEM Teacher Awards acknowledges and recognises the hard work, diversity and creativity of teachers from the basic level to the Senior High School (SHS) level. Teachers would be rewarded based on how well they champion STEM education,” he said.

Rev. Perbi explained that the awards programme would offer the teachers an opportunity to showcase the various methods through which they incorporate the teaching and learning of STEM to their main curriculum.

Prizes

The top 16 most engaging entries shortlisted as finalists for the awards programme would receive a backpack award with STEM sets.

The overall winner would receive a one year data subscription with laptop and modem.

Additionally, the winner becomes an Instant Schools Ambassador who would join the winner from the Literacy Challenge to drive the Instant Schools Virtual Learning Platform across the communities visited by the fountain in Ghana.

The first runner up will receive a six months data subscription with tablet and modem whilst the second runner up receives a three months data subscription with tablet and modem.

STEM education

The Deputy Director for Quality and Access at GES, Dr Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, said Vodafone through its initiatives such as the Instant Schools platform has helped many teachers in transforming STEM education across the country.

“While we launch the awards initiative, it is pleasing to note that a lot of our teachers, through their own initiative and our coordinators, have used the Instant Schools platform and other platforms given by Vodafone to improve STEM education.

“We are thus excited that it is culminating in an opportunity to reward the selflessness and efforts of our teachers,” he said.
