Police at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa checkpoint in the Volta Region intercepted a large cache of ammunition hidden in a passenger bus during a routine inspection in the early hours of Friday, April 18, 2025.
At around 3:30 a.m., officers stopped a Hyundai bus with registration number GR 8246-Q, which was travelling from Accra to Benin.
During the search, they discovered 60 cartons of AAA cartridges, amounting to 15,000 rounds and 72 cartons of BB cartridges, totalling 18,000 rounds.
The ammunition was concealed in sacks and hidden beneath passenger luggage in an apparent effort to avoid detection.
The driver, 45-year-old Abasou Fousseni, and his co-driver, Salisu Jalilu, 38, were immediately taken into custody for questioning.
Although both men initially claimed to have no knowledge of the concealed cargo, further police intelligence revealed that the co-driver was responsible for loading the ammunition into the vehicle before departure.
After preliminary investigations, the driver was granted police enquiry bail to continue the journey with the other passengers, while the co-driver remains in police custody to assist with ongoing investigations.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
In a statement issued by the Public Affairs Unit and signed by DSP Felix Danku, the Service reiterated its unwavering commitment to tackling cross-border crime and ensuring public safety.
The police reaffirmed their dedication to upholding peace and stability in the Volta Region and across Ghana’s borders, urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.
