Voter roll: Mahama exaggerating missing names – John Boadu

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stop claiming that the Electoral Commission (EC) has eliminated names of NDC supporters from the voter register.

The General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, pointed out that his party is equally affected by the development hence it was false that the EC was targeting the opposition party.

He told theghanareport.com in the Akuapim South Constituency, about 141 people had their names missing from the register when they went to verify after the EC started the exhibition exercise.

“You cannot say this is an NDC stronghold,” Mr Boadu stated.

He also cited the Upper Denkyira West, where the number of people who registered was over 700 but only 200 names were found.

Both constituencies are NPP strongholds as no one from the NDC has ever held those seats in the political history of the country.

Mr Boadu criticised the “unfortunate attitude of the NDC sometimes” which he said sometimes escalated issues.

He charged his political rivals to commit to proposed solutions “instead of casting insinuations and alleging of connivance between government and the EC”.

Turning his attention to the election management body, Mr Boadu said: “We will still be on them to ensure a smooth and fair election”.

He said the EC “has to go the extra mile to ensure that they work within the law” to ensure “that nobody is disqualified if the person is qualified to register”.

At Least 29,442 Names Missing From New Voters’ Register-NDC Claims

The NDC is reporting widespread discrepancies in at least 12 constituencies with the tally of affected people hitting 29,442.

Among the high-profile people affected, according to Mr Mahama, was his running mate Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and MP for Ashaiman, Ernest Norgbey.

Both politicians had the issue corrected but the NDC fears the affected people might be more.

EC assures of public of addressing problems

Responding to the development, the EC said it was committed to finding solutions to all the raised concerns.

The EC said it was common for such errors to occur and it would work to ensure that the margin of error in the voter register is negligible.

Two more days have been added to the exhibition period which is expected to end on September 27.
