Walewale: 2 injured, shops vandalised in alleged military brutality
One person has suffered a broken wrist, and another is dealing with a swollen eye after military personnel reportedly assaulted them at Gbimsi, near Walewale in the North East Region.
This incident occurred while the military was enforcing a curfew in the area.
Both victims have since received medical treatment and been discharged. This marks the 10th reported case of military brutality within a week of the curfew’s implementation.
Dr. Tia Mahama Kabiru, the Member of Parliament for the constituency, condemned the military’s actions after visiting the victims. He reiterated his appeal to the Ministry of the Interior to lift the curfew and provide relief to the affected residents as soon as possible.
In a troubling new episode on Saturday evening, armed soldiers allegedly rampaged the area, pulling individuals from their homes and assaulting them with mesh wires and the butts of their guns.
One of the victims, Mohammed Waliu, was attacked at around 6:30 PM while outside his home.
He now suffers from a swollen eye and physical pain. His father, a witness to the incident, has called on the government to investigate the soldiers’ conduct, warning that such actions threaten the peace in the region.
Daniel Yidana, a 42-year-old elder from the community, has also accused the military of injuring his wrist. He recounted being attacked while walking home just half an hour before the curfew was set to begin. Samiatu Yussif reported that soldiers invaded and vandalised her store, and she had to plead extensively to avoid physical harm.
Since the curfew was imposed on February 15 across several areas of the West Mamprusi Municipality—including Walewale, Loagri, Kukua, Gbimsi, and Wulugu—there have been nearly daily reports of military violence, resulting in two deaths and numerous injuries.
This latest incident in Gbimsi follows similar raids in Kukuazugu and Nayilifong, raising the total number of reported military brutality incidents to 10.
Dr. Kabiru has condemned these actions after meeting with the victims and has urged the community to remain calm while assuring them that high-level efforts are underway to restore their freedoms.
He stressed the pressing need for an immediate lift of the curfew.
