Weija-Gbawe MP demands an end to incessant blackouts

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has appealed to authorities to urgently address ongoing power outages in his constituency, which have disrupted lives and livelihoods for months.

In a statement, Mr Shaib criticized the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) for failing to communicate planned outages or provide reliable service, leaving many communities in the dark—sometimes for over four consecutive days.

“These unannounced blackouts have serious consequences,” he said, citing the negative impact on businesses, schools, health facilities, and general quality of life. “Economic activity is being stalled, lives are being endangered, and basic services are being compromised.”

Although he acknowledged the broader national energy challenges, the MP argued that Weija-Gbawe has been disproportionately affected.

“Despite repeated engagements with ECG, there’s been no meaningful progress,” he stated. “While GRIDCo has promised intervention, residents are still suffering.”

He called on the ECG, GRIDCo, and the Ministry of Energy to act swiftly and decisively: “The people of Weija-Gbawe deserve better.”
