We’ll protect consumers amid push for massive utility tariff hikes – PURC
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Ghanaian consumers, even as utility providers seek steep increases in tariffs.
This assurance follows significant proposals from Ghana Water Limited (GWL) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), both requesting tariff hikes of over 200% to offset rising operational costs.
GWL is seeking regulatory approval for a 281% increase in water tariffs from GH¢5.28 to GH¢20.09 per cubic metre. Meanwhile, ECG has proposed raising its Distribution Service Charge (DSC1) from GHp19.0875/kWh to an average of GHp61.8028/kWh.
The utility attributes this request to inflation, currency depreciation, high interest rates, and the need to recoup infrastructure investment costs.
These proposed adjustments have sparked public concern, with many consumers arguing that the requested increases are excessive and not reflective of current service quality.
Responding to the growing backlash on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, PURC Board Member Nana Yaa Jantuah emphasised the Commission’s responsibility to strike a fair balance.
“Energy is costly, and ensuring its availability is essential for consumers, for industry, and for the broader economy. Yes, quality of service must improve, but we also face the challenge of keeping utilities financially sustainable. Our goal is to arrive at a solution that is fair to both consumers and service providers a win-win outcome,” she said.
She reiterated that the PURC will thoroughly assess all proposals and ensure that any approved adjustments are justified, reasonable, and tied to improved service delivery.
