‘Why should being a female divorcee matter?’ – Ablakwa condemns sexism

NDC North Tongu MP has said the party is ready to confront any sexism thrown at Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang who has been named running mate to John Mahama.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa expressed disgust at any attempt to pull up Prof. Opoku Agyemang’s marital status and use it against her.

Prof. Nana Opoku Agyemang is a divorcee and a mother of three and was the Education Minister under the Mahama administration from 2013 to 2017.

But she has been thrown into a much deeper end of politics as she accepts to be Ghana’s potential vice-president.

Okudzeto Ablakwa indicated he was aware of the attacks that can come at her, but he singled out her marital status as a no-go area, condemning it as unfair, chauvinistic, and sexiest.

The NDC MP who worked as deputy minister to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said there are many men in politics whose marital status has not been a subject of conversation, controversy, or criticisms.

‘Why should a woman’s status be treated differently?’ he said.

Okudzeto Ablakwa complained about the degradation of the quality of Ghana’s politics and said dirty politics was one of the reasons women shy away from participating in national development.

He pointed to low levels of female representation in parliament as a sign of women generally preferring to sit on the fence.

Okudzeto Ablakwa said Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s only daughter also initially had reservations about her mother joining a trade that appears unaccommodating of women.

He called the professor a kind woman who was concerned about children and had hoped to set up a crèche once she retired.

But politics came calling for the professor who was a moderator during the IEA presidential debate in 2012.

Incidentally, John Mahama was president during the debate. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang who asked him questions would now join him to answer questions on the campaign trail as the NDC tries to convince Ghanaians that John Mahama should be given another chance.
