The Head of Virology at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), Professor Kofi Bonnie, has warned that the recent resurgence of COVID-19 is not confined to the University of Ghana but is being reported in several regions across the country.
In an interview, Prof. Bonnie urged the public to take renewed precautions as the rainy season brings a rise in flu-like illnesses, increasing the risk of respiratory infections, including COVID-19.
“This is not a localised situation, we’re seeing cases in multiple regions. So while the University of Ghana has issued an alert for its community, the message applies nationwide. Everyone should be vigilant,” he stated.
His remarks follow a circular from the University of Ghana Health Directorate on June 23, warning of suspected and confirmed COVID-19 cases in and around the university.

Prof. Bonnie emphasised that the resurgence, coupled with seasonal flu, poses a greater public health threat if preventive measures are ignored.
“We must return to the basics wearing masks, avoiding crowded spaces when possible, and distancing ourselves from people showing symptoms like coughing and sneezing,” he advised.
The university’s alert, aimed at students, staff, and visitors, calls for strict adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols to avoid disruption to academic and social activities.
Prof. Bonnie echoed the need for nationwide vigilance: “Now is the time to act not just in response to one circular, but as a collective effort to prevent another wave.”
