The legal team of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has confirmed that all bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) have been met.
However, his release has been delayed by a surprise legal motion filed at the High Court.
Lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi, speaking to journalists on Friday, May 30, assured the public that Wontumi was in stable condition despite the ongoing legal drama.
“He is good, he is healthy, and there is nothing to worry about,” Appiah-Kubi stated, dispelling growing concerns among supporters since his client’s arrest.
Chairman Wontumi was granted bail on Wednesday, May 28, with conditions including a GH¢50 million bond and two justified sureties. According to his lawyer, those terms have been fully satisfied.
“We have been able to provide the sureties. That one, I can assure you,” Appiah-Kubi confirmed.
He expressed special gratitude to Abetifi MP and former Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, whose assistance proved pivotal in meeting the bail terms.
“I’m very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong, who supported me in providing documents well over the required value,” he said.
However, just as Wontumi’s legal team was preparing for his release, an unexpected legal obstacle emerged.
“Unknown to me, an application was filed that prohibits us from securing his release,” Appiah-Kubi revealed.
The motion, filed by Marfo & Associates at the High Court in Accra, seeks a review of the bail conditions. While the specific content of the application has not yet been disclosed, sources close to the case suggest it could significantly delay Wontumi’s release.
Wontumi was initially questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 27, before being transferred to EOCO for further investigation into alleged financial crimes, including possible financial loss to the state.
The case has attracted nationwide attention and deepened political tensions. Key NPP figures including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin visited the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to check on Wontumi’s welfare.
As of Friday evening, security remained tight around the NIB premises, while crowds of NPP supporters continued to gather in a show of solidarity.
