You’re here to do your paymasters’ bidding – Lawyer in Canadian kidnap case accuses witness

Counsel for accused persons in the trial of two Canadian girls kidnapped in 2019 has descended heavily on a police officer who took part in the investigations.

Detective Sergeant Slyvester Essel, the tenth prosecution, is a Digital Analyst with the Cyber Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department.

As part of his investigation, he examined 10 mobile phones, which was part of the items the police retrieved at the hideout of the four accused persons.

His analysis revealed that the phones belonged to three of the accused persons — Samson Agharlor, also known as Romeo, Yusif Yakubu and Jeff Omarsar.

Mr Essel said after profiling the call records, he confirmed that Aghalor and Yakubu had communicated during the kidnapping period.

He was also able to retrieve a picture of two white ladies who sat with their hands behind them and stains that looked like blood on their attire.

Images of weapons and ammunition were seen on the Vivo phone, and the Infinix phone believed to be a property of Samson Agharlor.

But counsel for the accused Yaw Dankwa inquired how he was able to determine that the phones belonged to the three accused persons and not any other person.

“To the best of my knowledge the two SIM cards belong to Jeff Omarsar. As an investigator I know that people buy SIM cards and use it to commit crime.

“On page 51 of my report, I established that Jeff Omarsar had saved a contact number 0200390655, which belonged to Samson Agarlor.

“Again, it was noted that this other number 0548727675 which was also saved was the contact number of Yussif Yakubu. On page 11, we have the MTN number which belonged to Jeff Omarsar,” he told the Accra High Court.

Mr Dankwa said the police officer’s testimony could not be true.

“You did not do this investigation with an open mind. You went in to tilt things to favour the prosecution who are your paymasters,” Mr Dankwa suggested.

The witness disagreed, adding that he always made it a point to discharge his duties with professionalism.
