Sixteen persons have sustained severe injuries in a premix fuel explosion at Ngyiresia, in the Western region.

According to Nana Doko Agyeman III, the traditional leader of Ngyiresia, the incident occurred around 4:00 pm on Saturday, May 18, 2024, when fishermen were transporting premix fuel in gallons to their canoes along the beach.

The explosion also damaged two stationary vehicles—a Land Rover and an Opel Astra—and some nearby wooden structures.

The chief explained that, due to the lack of an access route from the main road to the beach, fishermen usually roll barrels of fuel on the ground to the beach. This method led to the explosion during transport.

Thirteen of the victims were transported to Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, with the other three victims treated at Saint Benedict Hospital, Inchaban.

In response to the incident, Professor Dr. Grace Ayensu Dankwa, the NDC Parliamentary candidate for Essikado Ketan Constituency, visited the victims at Effia Nkwanta Hospital.

She provided assistance for surgeries and donated items to support hospital operations.

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) also donated GHC10,000 to cover the medical bills of the victims.

Meanwhile, police have since commenced investigations into matter.
