A 17-year-old boy has died after two motorbikes crashed at Gomoa Akraman on the Gomoa Akotsi -Kwanyarko road in the Central Region.

The accident occurred on Saturday, April 29, 2023.

According to the twin brother of the deceased, Atta Kakra, his brother was riding a motorbike to buy fuel at Gomoa Akotsi when the incident happened.

He said another rider heading in the opposite direction lost control of his motorbike and veered into the other lane.

The motorbikes crashed into each other, killing the 17-year-old on the spot.

The other rider was rushed to St. Gregory Hospital in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Commercial Riders group of Gomoa Akraman, Seth Quainoo, said he believes the victim could have survived the accident by wearing a helmet.

Statistics reveal a worrying trend with motorcyclists and their pillion riders. They are more exposed to road traffic deaths than other road user groups.

According to data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), although the number of motorcycles involved in crashes reduced by 11.9 per cent from 6,166 in 2021 to 5,432 in 2022, most of the fatalities on the road involved motorcyclists.

NRSA revealed that 41 per cent of the 2,373 deaths through road fatalities in 2022 involved motorcycles.
