A family has lost two of their children through drowning in the Dwahel River at Ahodwo near Sepaase in the Ashanti Region.

On Saturday, February 24, 2024, Shilla Twumasi 15 years old, and Alex Gyamfi, eight, reportedly went to swim in the river but unfortunately drowned in the process.

A police report said they were rescued and rushed to the Afari Community Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.

“Police proceeded to the hospital on inquiries and inspection and found the bodies of the deceased lying in the same hospital morgue,” the Sepaase Police said in their report.

It added that on inspection, no marks of violence were seen on both bodies to suggest foul play.

Drowning incidents involving children have become a regular occurrence in many Ghanaian communities.

These unfortunate cases are cutting short the lives of some of the nation’s vulnerable ones.

In January 2024, an 11-year-old boy drowned in the Ayitikope Dam in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta region.

He reportedly went to swim in the dam with some other children when their parents left for a funeral in another community.

Some residents of Ayitikope upon a thorough search in the dam discovered the body at about 3:30 pm on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
