Two siblings have drowned in an abandoned pool at Akyem Oda in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The two, Esther Dede, 13, and Kofi Asare, six, met their untimely death on Sunday, May 21, 2023

Mother of the deceased, Grace Asare, while narrating the incident said the children went out to play close to the abandoned pool on the compound of an out-of-use sawmill.

According to the distraught mother, a four-year-old boy that was playing with them reported that the ball they were playing with had fallen into the pool.

Esther, in her attempt to retrieve the ball, fell into the pool and began to drown.

When Kofi saw that his sister was drowning, he also jumped into the pool to rescue her but both of them drowned.

However, some residents discounted Ms Asare’s claim, saying her negligence resulted in the death of her two children.

They said when they reported to her that her two children were struggling to survive in the pool, she never took the matter seriously but concentrated on the preparation of her supper.

According to them, when Ms Asare realised late that evening that her two children had not returned home, she informed the neighbours, who joined her to search for the children.

They later found the bodies of the children and reported the case to the police.

Meanwhile, Chief Superintendent Daniel Amoako, the Oda Municipal Police Commander confirmed the incident, adding that the bodies have been deposited at the Oda Government Hospital for autopsy and preservation pending investigation.
