2 trapped by falling roof after Wednesday’s downpour at Teshie

Two young men narrowly escaped death after the entire roofing of a building fell on their car at Teshie in Accra after Wednesday’s downpour.

This left them trapped under the rubble.

The roof fell from a storey building under construction housing many businesses at the St Anne Catholic Church, Teshie.

Officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the Ghana Police were called to the scene to rescue the victims.

Meanwhile, one of the victims sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a nearby health facility while the other escaped unhurt.

The heavy winds that preceded the rains also destroyed other structures including a school building in the same vicinity.

The rainfall has also flooded some parts of the city.

On May 6, 2024, another downpour left one person in critical condition after a tree fell on an SUV vehicle and a motorcycle at Cantonment, near the Italian Embassy in Ghana.

The heavy wind caused the tree to uproot, slamming into the front of the Toyota SUV with registration number GE- 685-14 and directly on the motor rider.

Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GHNFS) swiftly arrived at the scene.

Using chainsaws, they worked to lift the tree and removed the vehicles that were trapped beneath.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has advised the public to brace themselves for more rainfall, particularly in Southern Ghana.

The agency said the rains are likely to be moderate or severe and will come with strong winds that are likely to bring destruction, ripping off roofing sheets and possibly taking down tree branches.
