2021 Total U17 Africa Cup of Nations cancelled

The 2021 Total CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament has been cancelled.

The youth championship to be hosted by Morocco was scheduled to begin on March 13 and end on the 31st of March.

With less than a week to the start of the tournament, CAF at an Emergency Committee meeting held on Monday, March 08, 2021, in Rabat, Morocco took a decision to cancel the tournament.

According to the Committee, the resurgence of the Covid19 pandemic and some constraints faced by some of the participating member associations as well as the host country called for the late decision.

Although the Committee was impressed with the U-20 AFCON recently concluded in Mauritania, they believe cancelling the U-17 AFCON is the best decision, taking into account the cancellation by FIFA of the Under-17 World Cup for which the U-17 CAN serve as qualifiers.

Meanwhile, CAF prepares for the resumption of the qualifying matches for the 2022 AFCON tournament later this month.
