Southampton boss Hasenhuttl speaks on Salisu’s Ghana future

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl believes some people would deem it opportunistic if defender Mohammed Salisu decides to play for Ghana after the World Cup qualification.

The 22- year- old is reported to have turned down a few attempts by the Ghana FA to represent the country of his birth, with his response being unreadiness.

There has been a renewed interest in the player after the Black Stars booked a place in the upcoming World Cup, with some asking the GFA to put in much effort to get Salisu to join the team.

However, some are also of the view that he should not be called and that the FA should stick with players willing to honour earlier callups.

“It is an interesting question, and we are always talking about it,” Hasenhuttl told Hampshirelive.

“I don’t know whether it changes now, but I think it doesn’t help because the team made it to the World Cup, and they deserve to play there, and he was not part of it.

“But what happens in the future, I don’t know; it is his decision,” he stated.

He received his first call up to the Black Stars back in 2019 when at Real Valladolid, only to be unavailable as he cited injury concerns.

Salisu has been very impressive for Southampton, recording the highest number of interceptions than any player after 30 appearances in all competitions in the English top-flight this season.

The young defender has established himself as a regular in Hasenhuttl’s side in his second season in English football, following his move from Real Valladolid in the summer of 2020.
