A Basic Recipe To Make Your Own Ice Cream Cake

Making your own ice cream cake is a fun and delicious process. You have so much freedom with flavours and decorations but do be forewarned that it can take a couple of days with the freezer if you’re planning ahead.

Please keep in mind that cakes do not need to be perfect as they are really meant to be tasty and fun, so be sure to enjoy them while they last! Here is a basic recipe to get you started creating your own. Feel free to customize it based on your preferences, themes, and needs.

  • Ice Cream (2-3 flavours of your choice)
  • Cake Layers (you can use store-bought or homemade)
  • Cookie Crumbs or Crushed Nuts (optional, for texture)
  • Chocolate Sauce or Caramel Sauce (optional, for extra flavour)
  • Whipped Cream (optional, for decoration)
  • Additional toppings (sprinkles, chocolate chips, etc.)

Prepare the Cake Layers
  • You can bake your own cake layers or use store-bought ones. Choose flavours that complement your ice cream choices.
  • Allow the cake layers to cool completely before assembling the ice cream cake.

Line the pan:

  • Line the bottom of a springform pan with parchment paper, this will make it easier to remove the ice cream cake later.
To add the first ice cream layer:
  • Soften the first flavour of ice cream slightly, so it’s easy to spread. You can leave it at room temperature for a few minutes.
  • Spread the softened ice cream evenly over the bottom of the pan.
Add the cake layer.
  • Place one of the cake layers on top of the first ice cream layer.
Optional: Add toppings and sauce.
  • Sprinkle cookie crumbs, crushed nuts, or any other toppings you like over the cake layer.
  • Drizzle chocolate sauce or caramel sauce for added flavour.
Add the second ice cream layer.
  • Soften the second flavour of ice cream and spread it evenly over the cake layer.
Repeat Layers:
  • Repeat the process with additional cake layers, toppings, and ice cream flavours until you reach the top of the pan.
  • Place the assembled ice cream cake in the freezer and let it freeze completely. This usually takes several hours or overnight.
Decorate and Serve:
  • Once the cake is fully frozen, you can remove it from the pan.
  • If desired, decorate the top with whipped cream, additional toppings, or more sauce before serving.
Slice and Enjoy:
  • Use a sharp knife dipped in warm water to slice the cake. This will help you get clean slices.

Feel free to experiment with different ice cream flavours, cake types, and toppings to create a custom cake that suits your taste preferences. Honestly, doing a trial DIY ice cream cake when you have no important events coming up can be super helpful. However, if you have any crafty helpers in your family who match your level of patience (or exceed it) to team up with you in this project, the more the merrier!
