Akufo-Addo launches National Youth Policy
The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has launched the National Youth Policy (2022-2032) at the first National Youth Conference held at Anagkazo, Akwapem Mampong in the Eastern Region, to climax this year’s International Youth Day commemoration on 12th August, 2022.
Speaking at the conference and launch of the National Youth Policy, the President emphasized the need for Africa’s investment in the development of its human capital, to ensure the accelerated growth of the continent. He admonished the youth against engaging in rebellious and unproductive activities, even in the midst of seemingly challenging times of unemployment; as the government is striving to create the right environment for the youth to thrive and contribute to the socio-economic gains of the country.
The President, accordingly outlined the many initiatives and interventions rolled out by his government to ensure quality education that will prepare the youth for future opportunities. He intimated that, aside the free Senior High Secondary (SHS) that has enrolled 1.6 million youth in secondary education, TVET is being incorporated into the education system to provide young people with skills and requisite training to enable them take advantage of economic opportunities. He further stated that the Teacher and Nursing Trainee Allowances and the No-guarantor Policies have widened access to tertiary education.
According to the President, an industry-driven economy will facilitate job creation and to this end, his government initiated the One District One Factory (1D1F) to provide means of employment to some Ghanaian youth, as well as, to promote the consumption of quality locally manufactured products to meet the needs of Ghanaians and reduce dependence on imported goods. The President emphasized that “58 of these factories are owned and managed by young people who have received direct support from government.” The National Entrepreneurship and Innovative Program and the YouStart initiatives are other avenues he explained will create opportunities for young people.
His Excellency professed that, “The solution to the mirage of challenges that the youth face are not going to be made for the youth, but in collaboration with the youth. The government has come to this understanding because of the impressive number of young minds who sit around the table where decisions on the affairs of this country are taken.” Consequently, the President successfully launched the National Youth Policy (2022- 2032) and the Implementation Plan.
In his closing remarks, he expressed his appreciation to the National Youth Authority and the youth of Ghana for conferring on him the Star of the Youth of Ghana Award.
