Armed robbers have attacked workers and security officers on the railway bridge site of the Ofankor-Nsawam road project.

According to Abdulai Mahama, the Senior Project Manager of the Ofankor-Nsawam road project, the robbery occurred in the early hours of Sunday, May 26, 2024, at the Ofankor railway bridge section of the road.

He said the security officers were attacked after they confronted the men who had come to steal the contents of a broken-down truck from Burkina Faso.

Mr Mahama said the armed robbers tied two security men and two others who were in the truck and bolted with money and mobile phones.

“The head of internal security called me that apparently one of Burkina or the foreign trucks had developed a fault in that particular section. And as usual, when there are some of these faulty vehicles, these robbers make it a target to be able to go and get what is in those trucks.

“So, one of the security men informed us that around 12:45 am, a Camry salon car, Toyota Camry, it is a black vehicle, got to that location and approached the security,” he said.

He added that this was a regular occurrence whenever a truck broke down on the Ofankor stretch.

Meanwhile, he said they have reported the case to the Ofankor police.

Investigations are currently underway to arrest the robbers.

The road project is a 33.4km stretch, which forms part of the Accra-Kumasi road network.

Construction commenced in 2022 and includes four interchanges and flyovers at Amasaman, Kpobiman, Medie, and Nsawam Junction.
