Asafa Powell is here to inspire every Ghanaian doing sports – GOC President
Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President Ben Nunoo-Mensah believes former Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell’s visit to Ghana is to inspire young Ghanaian athletes.
He said this when Powell was met at the Kotoka International Airport by a strong-powered delegation from the GOC with African Paralympic Committee President Samson Deen also present.
Powell and his Ghanaian wife Alyshia Akua Miller-Powell are scheduled to meet Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif.
Speaking to the press, the GOC President outlined the reason behind the former 100-metre world record holder’s visit to Ghana.
“But for COVID, Alyshia and Asafa would have been here much earlier. What we were looking for is looking for a sports icon who can motivate our young…Asafa is here to inspire every Ghanaian doing sports” Nunoo-Mensah said.
Powell retired in 2021 after a decorated career that had him win gold medals in the 4×100 metre relay at the 2016 Olympics and 2009 and 2015 World Championships.
He twice broke the 100 metre world record and his personal best time of 9.72 seconds is the fourth time fastest ever.
