Ayebea Darko: I never thought I’ll win AMVCA Best Unscripted Series

Ghanaian filmmaker and producer of reality show hit “GH Queens”, Ayebea Darko says she never thought of winning the first Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMCVA) for Best Unscripted Series.

“GH Queens“ beat tough competition from “The Real Housewives of Lagos”, “Nightlife in Lasgidi”, and “LOL Naija” to emerge winners.

The series follows the daily lives of social media influencers, Efia Odo, Mona 4 Real, Michy Diamond, and Cookie T as they navigate fame in the bustling world of Ghanaian showbiz and capture the eyes and hearts of reality show lovers in Ghana and beyond through its raw unfiltered storytelling.

The win was a monumental achievement for Darko, as it is the first Ghanaian reality show to earn this nomination since the inception of the AMVCA in 2013.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (15 May), Darko said she was surprised after her nomination.

“I was lying in my living room… and then the head of Akwaaba Magic called me but it was like 11pm and I was like why is she calling me at this time? So, I almost didn’t pick up the phone. I [later] picked up and she was like you got nominated …”

“I never thought I would win though … I was in a category with “Real Housewives of Lagos”, so, in my mind, I was like this nomination was a win, it was only me and Nana Akoto nominated from Ghana.”

“So we were just grateful to be nominated. Honestly, I took that as a win, I did not think I would win at all,” Darko said.
