Bagbin’s suspension of new ministers’ approval disappointing – Majority

The Majority caucus in Parliament has expressed disappointment over the Speaker of Parliament’s decision to suspend the approval of ministers and deputy ministers of state.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on Wednesday, March 20, suspended the approval of Akufo-Addo’s new ministerial nominees following their vetting which ended on March 12.

He cited an injunction against the process secured by South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, hence could not take place.

This he noted was similar to the presidency’s directive for the House to refrain from transmitting the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values popularly known as the Anti-LGBTQI+ bill for assent due to an application for an interlocutory injunction at the Supreme Court.

In a statement signed by the Majority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin in response to the Speaker’s decision, he expressed worry describing the move as undemocratic.

He accused the Speaker of intentionally withholding approval for these appointees, thus hindering the President and his government from receiving their assistance.

“The upshot is that Mr Speaker has torpedoed the Government’s work by depriving the President and Ghana of the able men and women who will assist him in running the Government machinery.”

“It is our humble belief that it is the Speaker who is undermining our democracy and not Mr President.”

The majority leader also condemned the Speaker for adjourning the house without consulting the leadership of the House.

“The decision of Mr Speaker to adjourn the house without recourse to its members, especially the Leadership, is most arbitrary, capricious, and undemocratic. The settled practice has always been that the leadership of the house guide the Chair to conduct the Business of the House.”
