Ban On Tricycles: Meet Operators Halfway – Muntaka Tells KMA

Source The Ghana Report

Member of Parliament for Asawase, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has advised the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to review a ban on tricycles in the central business centre.

KMA began the enforcement of a ban on the movement of tricycles, popularly known as Pragya, in the Central Business District (CBD) on July 26, 2023.

On Tuesday, August 1, chaos broke out between the operators and security officials as they intensified the enforcement, leading to the arrest of some defiant operators.

The operators blocked some major roads in the city, causing disruptions in business activities in protests after implementing the ban.

One such protest brought the Aboabo Highway to a standstill on Wednesday, August 9.

After meeting with the operators, Mr Muntaka called on KMA to engage with the operators to find common ground.

He said this is to prevent the situation from affecting the peace and security in the city.

He added that care must be taken when dealing with a population without formal jobs as this could lead to “uprisings which we may not want”.

“What I saw on Wednesday morning, nothing is scarier than that because there was massive traffic as almost every major street in the area was blocked as a result of the tricycle operators’ protests.

“So I will advise the city authorities to meet them halfway because there are good guys among them who are using this business to take care of themselves and their families,” he stressed.
